      HOPATCONG KIDS CARE

Students at Hudson Maxim and Tulsa Trail Elementary Schools are learning about the importance of working together to help others in need through compassion and hard work.

In response to the Tsunami disaster, the schools‚ guidance counselor, Sheri Burkat, coordinated an initiative to educate students while raising funds for UNICEF.

Parents and staff were notified to encourage children to earn money (the goal of $1 per student) by doing extra chores at home or using any other creative idea. Some teachers have also used a penny jar in class allowing children opportunities to earn change through positive class behavior and work.

Funds were collected over a two week time period. A daily account was posted in a central location at both schools to provide a visible incentive.

The children were motivated to earn money and were excited to see the total climb each day. Currently, the schools have raised more than $2,800 for Southeast Asian children and families.

In addition to collecting funds for individuals in desperate need, the project enabled our children the opportunity to feel empowered through their own actions while realizing that everyone can make a positive difference in the world.

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS RAISE MONEY FOR TSUNAMI RELIEF

The disaster in Asia has brought out the charitable nature once again of students, parents and staff of the Hopatcong Middle School. Soon after learning about the tsunami and its devastation, Mrs. Collington and Mrs. Jiuliano began to organize a relief fund effort. The students in their classes brainstormed ideas that would quickly raise money to help the victims and survivors. Enlisting the help of their own seventh and sixth grade team as well as the sixth grade Blue Team, a bake sale and raffle was held during the week of January 17th. Mrs. Spear and Mrs. Stendor coordinated the bake sale event while Mr. Longo and the Student Council began a “spare change” collection during the lunch periods.

The staff of the Middle School donated money and supplies to make baskets of goodies that were raffled off each day to the students. A jean day was also held on Friday, January 28th and each teacher paid five dollars to wear jeans to school on that day.
Parents were especially generous with cash donations and donations of baked goods for the sale. Students enjoyed all the goodies and the great raffle items each day and were unselfish in throwing that spare nickel or dime into a can in the lunch room. As a result of all these efforts the total that the Middle School will send to UNICEF is $4292.84. The generosity of the Middle School community reflects the generosity and charity of our country as a whole.
